Derek was the heart and soul of [[Mercia]] for four decades and was a keen player who also represented his county on many occasions. In that time he both played as one of their best players and dedicated large amounts of his time to the running of the club. He was one of the strongest club players and first team Captain for most of his career. He reached his highest grade of 155 in 2010 and remained at this level until his recent illness. In addition to club chess Derek selfishly took on many roles for all local leagues and county level. For the WDCL he was President from 2005 to 2007 and long term Auditor for 17 years. He was also the county representative for 12 years and served on the rules committee when asked. He was also treasurer and officer of the Dudley league for many years. Derek will be mostly remembered as one of the most likeable and respected members of the local chess community. His loss will be felt by all those who knew him.
