George Hill 1934-2002

George Hill passed away aged 68 years on Friday 6th December 2002. He had been a member of West Bromwich Chess Club for the past 12 years. It was with this club that he was introduced to the Wolverhampton and District League. He had been an ever present in the Birmginham league since the 1950s, most recently with West Bromwich, Warley Quinborne and Birmingham.

He will be remembered for his seemingly natural sacrificial attacking style of play, which drew many a crowd at weekend tournaments all around the country over the years.

George also brought a lot of youngsters through with his coaching ability, particularly with the outset of the "Checkmate chess club" and in subsequent years, notable Ameet Ghasi and Sophie Tidman.

A sad loss to the game.
