G. Leslie Roberts 1925-1999

It is with great sadness that I report the death of Les Roberts on 21st April 1999 aged 74 years.

Les was a hardworking supporter of Telford Chess Club. He acted as both Club President and Treasurer, the latter a duty he had undertaken for over 20 years.

Les also made a substantial contribution to Shropshire Chess. When he became Treasurer of the MCCU in 1976 there was very little money in the Bank. When he retired in 1993 the bank balance neared £3,000. A worthy testimony to his endeavour!

In 1994 Les was awarded the BCF President's award in recognition of his services to Chess. This was an honour he richly deserved.

Throughout the past season Les had been an ever-present member for the Telford B team.

I first met Les when he became MCCU treasurer and came to know him well. He was always willing to provide help and support. He will be sadly missed by Telford Chess Club and all who knew him.

On behalf of all involved with Wolverhampton Chess League my condolences are extended to Les's family and to Telford Chess Club on their sad loss.
