Robert J. F. Ward 2002

Robert passed away on the 26th October 2002 following a brave fight against cancer. His family were with him when he died.

Robert was a respected councillor serving on several committees at Wolverhampton City Council. He was well thought of and was well known for not using the word "no" when asked to undertake any job in connection with his Council duties. He was the same in the chess world.

Robert was president of the Cannock League, president elect of the Wolverhampton league, captain of the County under 125 team who he had lead to the national quarter finals on more than one occasion. He was also records secretary of the Wolverhampton summer league and also controller of the one day tournament organised by his own club, Wolverhampton. He also acted as controller of the Dudley and District junior tournament until it was discontinued owing to lack of support.

Robert played in various leagues for his club.

Two years ago Robert was elected a life vice president of the Staffordshire Chess association for his services to chess.

Robert lived life to the full, his passing will leave a great void to all who knew him, especially his family. Sue, Sam and Alex, who must be devastated by the loss of their "rock".

May I on behalf of the league and all who knew Robert offer our deepest condolences to his family in their sad loss.
