Derek W Perks 1954-2018

Derek was the heart and soul of Mercia for four decades and was a keen player who also represented his county on many occasions. During this time he both played as one of their best players and dedicated large amounts of his time to the running of the club. He was one of the strongest club players and first team Captain for most of his career. He reached his highest grade of 155 in 2010 and remained at this level until his recent illness taking many high graded scalps along the way. In addition to club chess Derek unselfishly took on many roles for all local leagues and county level. For the WDCL he was President from 2005 to 2007 and long term Auditor for 17 years.

Derek Perks December 2005

He was also the county representative for 12 years and served on the rules committee when asked. He was also treasurer and officer of the Dudley league for many years. Derek will be mostly remembered as one of the most likeable and respected members of the local chess community.

His loss will be felt by all those who knew him. Derek retired in December 2017 after many years as an Automotive Engineer and fought a brave fight against his illness. Outside of chess he was a keen fisherman, badminton player, ballroom dancer and football/cricket fan. He was a dedicated family man and leaves a wife, son and daughter and grandchildren. Our sympathies go out to them at this most difficult time.
